The FoodPeel App

FoodPeel is designed with privacy as a core principle. Here's how the app handles your data:

• No account required — You can use FoodPeel without creating an account, providing an email address, or signing in. The app works out of the box.
• Scan history is stored locally — Your scan history is saved on your device only. It is not uploaded to our servers or any third-party service. If you delete the app, your scan history is deleted with it.
• Camera access — FoodPeel uses your device camera only to scan barcodes. Images and video from the camera are processed on-device in real time and are never stored, recorded, uploaded, or transmitted anywhere. Camera access is used solely for barcode recognition.
• Network requests — When you scan a barcode, the app sends only the barcode number (a string of digits) to our API to look up product information. No personal data, device identifiers, or location data are included in these requests.
• Missing product submissions — If a scanned product is not in our database, you may optionally submit the product name to help us expand coverage. Only the barcode number and the product name you type are sent. No personal data is attached to these submissions.

What We Collect (Website)

On the FoodPeel website, we only collect what we actually need:

• Email address — collected when you sign up for the waitlist or newsletter. Used to send you launch updates and product news. That's it.
• Usage analytics — basic, anonymized data about how the website is used (e.g., which pages are popular). No personally identifiable information is collected or stored.

What We Do NOT Collect

• Your name (unless you choose to provide it)
• Your location or GPS data
• Your photos, camera roll, or any images from your device
• Your contacts or data from other apps
• Your purchase history or financial information
• Device identifiers for tracking or advertising purposes

We Do Not Sell Your Data

We will never sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share your personal data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes. This is a hard line for us — not a legal hedge.

If that ever changes (it won't), we will notify you directly and give you a clear opt-out before anything changes.

How We Store Your Data

App data: Your scan history and preferences are stored locally on your device. We do not have access to this data.

Website data: Any data you provide through the website (e.g., email signup) is stored securely using industry-standard encryption at rest and in transit. We use reputable third-party services (e.g., Formspree for form handling) that have their own privacy and security practices.

We do not store payment information ourselves — all payments are handled through Stripe, which is PCI-compliant.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access the data we have about you
• Correct any inaccurate information
• Delete your account and all associated data — just ask
• Unsubscribe from any emails at any time via the unsubscribe link

Cookies

FoodPeel's website uses minimal cookies — only what's needed for the site to function (e.g., form submission state). We do not use tracking cookies or third-party ad cookies.

Children's Privacy

FoodPeel is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us at privacy@foodpeel.com and we will delete it immediately.

Third-Party Services

FoodPeel uses the following third-party services:

• Open Food Facts — open-source food product database used for barcode lookups. Only the barcode number is sent; no personal data.
• USDA FoodData Central — U.S. government food database used as a fallback for barcode lookups. Only the barcode number is sent.
• Formspree — used for website contact form handling.
• Stripe — used for payment processing (PCI-compliant). We never see or store your card details.

We do not use any third-party advertising SDKs, tracking pixels, or analytics frameworks that collect personal information.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request its deletion, and opt out of its sale. Since we do not sell personal data, there is nothing to opt out of. For any requests, email privacy@foodpeel.com.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we'll notify you via email before the changes take effect. The effective date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
